Michigan Trip – Day 3 – Mackinaw Island
September 5, 2024 – After breakfast at the hotel, we hopped on board a ferry to travel 15-20 minutes to Mackinaw Island. The island can only be reached by boat, plane, or ferry. They don’t allow any motorized vehicles on the island. However, we did see several e-bikes. Bikes are the main transportation for the locals. You could also rent bikes if you want to bike around. The island is about 2 miles wide and 3 miles long.
After arriving at the ferry dock, we walked around the little town there, doing some sightseeing and shopping. We then took a carriage ride to several places on the island. It was a really nice tour and our tour guides were really fun and knowledgeable. It saved us a lot of walking and saw a lot of sites on the island.
Before we left the island, we ate at one of the local restaurants. There was a rain front coming in around 5:30pm, so we boarded the ferry to return to the mainland about 5pm. It started sprinkling when we got back to the car.
Since we changed hotels, we then traveled back across the bridge to Mackinac City where we spent the night.
The Rock Arch – a stop on our carriage ride
Wings of Mackinac – an arboretum full of live butterflies
The Little Stone Church – a site on our carriage ride
The Grand Hotel – one of just a few hotels on the island – $750/night
Various pictures of the town and it’s various horse-drawn carriages
