Alaska Trip Day 5 – Denali Covered Wagon
July 22, 2023
After eating breakfast at the lodge, we went on an excursion put on by Black Diamond that allowed us to experience what it was like to travel in a covered wagon; however, I believe the wagon was much more modern than in the day! Seats were cushioned, wheels were rubber, and the covered part had windows that allowed you to see through them.
After about 45 minutes on the wagon, we pull up to a cabin that we are going to eat lunch at. The “dry cabin” (cabin without water and electricity) had a lunchroom where everyone sat down for a really great lunch. We started out with corn bread and various salads: cole slaw, potato salad, and pasta salad. Then they brought out a vegetarian dish that was called “chili with sweet potatoes”. Then came corn-on-the-cob, grilled chicken legs, bbq ribs, and grilled salmon. It was also bottomless… like it really needed to be! Then to top it off, desert was a blueberry cake with whipped cream. I loved all of it, but Renee had the cornbread, the chicken and ribs, and desert.
We returned to the covered wagon and saw more views of the Denali area. The driver/guides were fun and informative. Here’s some of the views we experienced.
After returning to the lodge via the Black Diamond bus, we rested in our rooms for a while. Then we hit some of the shops across the road from the McKinley Main Lodge. Had some supper at Subway, then returned to our cabin for the evening.
That’s neat you got to ride in a covered wagon! And the lunch sounded delicious 🙂
